Lecture Title: Differentiated Instruction & the TESOL Classroom: Principles and Practice

Subject Area: English

Target Audience: All English teachers across all levels.

Lecturer: Dr. Sarah Rich from the School of Education and Lifelong Learning at the University of Exeter

Abstract:
Differentiated instruction is an educational approach which seeks to meet the needs and abilities of all learners in our classrooms. This is currently the focus of a considerable amount of interest in discussions of educational policy and practice around the globe. In my talk I will argue that the concept of differentiated instruction has much to offer TESOL practitioners. I will first discuss the reasons for the growth of interest in this teaching approach and the theoretical principles underpinning this. I will then go on to discuss practical steps teachers can take to implement this in their classrooms as well as the ways in which educational managers and decision-makers can develop a whole-school commitment to differentiation to help ensure its success.
