Best Practices in Science Curriculum Standards Implementation (3)

The CfBT Training Pack:

The CfBT Training Pack is a very valuable tool of professional development. It contains a series of workshops that have been conducted during 2005 by a highly professional team, which provided training about the best practices to implement the curriculum standards of English, Science and Math. This Training Pack is so valuable that it is actually now considered to be a reference for a lot of trainers and advisory teachers while supporting teachers within the IS.

 The Teachers’ Network is happy to put this Training Pack online. Each series of workshops related to a specific subject is going to be put in the form of PDF folders.

Aims of the workshop:
The purpose of the three five-day science workshops is to consider the curriculum
standards for science and to discuss the implications for planning the curriculum,
teaching, learning and assessment.

This workshop aims to help subject leaders and teachers to:

  • use practical work effectively in the science classroom;

  • design activities that help to develop science enquiry skills;

  • assess mastery of enquiry skills;

  • develop effective summative and formative assessment materials.

 The Science CfBT Training Pack :

The Science Training Pack consists of three full workshops. Like the Math workshops, the science training workshops were divided into five full training days and into16 sessions, each having its separate objectives, activities and material.  The Material of each workshop is going to be displayed in the following way:

  • The PowerPoint Presentation
  • The Teacher's Pack
  • The Trainer's Notes

Workshop three is going to display a long list of very useful resources, which are related to suggested lesson plans.

Objectives of Workshop Three:

Objectives of each session

Day 1: Effective use of practical work

Session 1: Different kinds of practical work

By the end of this session, subject leaders and teachers will:

  • know the aims of the workshop and the programme for the five days;
  • understand how different kinds of practical work can be incorporated into the scheme of work for a topic;
  • have had an opportunity to identify the different kinds of practical work and discuss how they might be used most appropriately.

Session 2: Effective teaching and learning

By the end of the session, subject leaders and teachers will:

  • have critically analysed a number of teaching and learning episodes;
  • be able to list critical points when planning effective teaching and learning.

Sessions 3 and 4: Different kinds of practical activity

By the end of the session, subject leaders and teachers will:

Day 2: Teaching enquiry skills

Session 5: Teaching enquiry skills

By the end of the session, subject leaders and teachers will:

  • know how to fit enquiry appropriately into a scheme of work;
  • know how and when to fit investigative work into a scheme of work.

Sessions 6 and 7: Designing and carrying out ‘fair’ investigations

By the end of the session, subject leaders and teachers will:

  • know how to plan an investigation;
  • have developed a number of investigations linked to the standards.

Day 3: Assessing practical work

Session 8: Approaches to the assessment of practical work

By the end of the session, subject leaders and teachers will:

  • be aware of a variety of techniques for assessing practical work;
  • be aware of the limitations of some techniques for assessing practical work and be able to choose appropriate ones.

Sessions 9 and 10: Assessing practical work

By the end of the session, subject leaders and teachers will:

  • be familiar with a range of assessment approaches to assess students engaged in practical activities;
  • develop criteria to assess a variety of different practical activities and skills;
  • assess a range of work against criteria.

Day 4: Assessment in science

Sessions 11: Assessment in science

By the end of the session, you will:

  • be aware that there is a wide range of formative and summative assessment techniques;
  • be aware of some of the basic principles of test construction.

Sessions 12 and 13: Creating assessment materials

By the end of the session, subject leaders and teachers will:

  • have an understanding of a range of assessment activities related to the standards;
  • have developed assessment questions across the grades;
  • be familiar with a range of approaches to assess students.

Day 5: Professional support

Session 14: Expert coaching: supporting colleagues in school

By the end of the session, subject leaders and teachers will:

•    be aware of a number of coaching techniques for supporting colleagues.

Session 15: Teacher support networks and action planning

By the end of the session, subject leaders and teachers will:

  • be able to identify their main support needs;
  • be able to suggest and prioritise ways to address their needs;
  • be able to identify mechanisms to address their professional needs.

Session 16: Science challenges

By the end of the session, subject leaders and teachers will:

•    be aware of how to organise a science challenge.
